In response to the federal government’s announcement limiting access to certain technology from Canadian 5G telecommunication networks, CCI President Benjamin Bergen made the following statement on behalf of our members:

“Today’s decision on the future of Canada’s 5G network infrastructure marks an important shift in policy thinking in Ottawa, one that we welcome and agree with as the correct course of action by our government.

“Throughout this extended saga, our homegrown Canadian members have urged the federal government to focus on building domestic cyber capacity so we can secure our digital borders and protect our citizens and critical public and private infrastructure. The imperative of building domestic cyber capacity is not just economic in nature — it’s existential to Canada’s national security in today’s globalized and digitally connected sociopolitical landscape.

“We’re pleased to see the federal government heed the calls of our organization to work with domestic innovators to ensure our national and economic security is not put at risk by short-sighted decisions related to new technologies, and we look forward to continuing to support the federal government in its efforts to build more resilient and secure digital infrastructure that Canadians rely upon.”
